Technology’s rapid growth over the last several years is making it easier than ever to think outside of the box and revolutionize the way you build and run your business. Several tools exist that allow workers from all over to connect with each other and collaborate with people in real time. This includes smartphones and social media – both of which enable us to work remotely and communicate effectively. This concept of remote work is especially prevalent in the technology industry. Web programmers and developers are those who can ease in today’s interconnected world. According to the Stack Exchange 2015 Developer Survey, developers who work remotely, full-time, earn an average of 40% more than those who do not. The global developer landscape is constantly evolving for those that know how to code, and as a result, hiring remote workers presents several key advantages, not only for you, but also for the workers. If you know where to find them, there is a great opportunity out there for working with remote web programmers who can help your business grow.

Do: Expand Your Talent Pool

One clear advantage of hiring a developer online is that it significantly expands the pool of candidates you can choose from. Expanding your online search can put you in touch with a far greater number of qualified professionals, giving you more choices and opportunities to find the right web programmer for your needs. If you only look locally, on the other hand, you may be competing with everyone else in the local market for the same talent. Expanding to other areas and looking for remote developers gives you quick access to better talent. You may be looking, for example, a developer with certain skills, experience, and intangibles. That person may or may not exist locally, but if you open your search up nationally or even internationally, you will have the ability to quickly find the right person.

Don’t: Work with Someone You Can’t Work With

Web programming and development projects are always changing. There will always be varying degrees and levels of user feedback, which means that you have to work with a developer that understands how to adapt and anticipate requirements throughout the life of the project, and not just while creating the initial specifications. You want to work with developers that understand the big picture, and that understand what needs to be done on a web programming project from start to finish. Good developers, no matter where they are, will have thoughtful insights and be able to adapt to new and growing technologies.

Do: Encourage Open Communication

Staying in close contact with remote developers and keeping an open flow of communication with them can be more valuable than you know. Make sure to have conversations, whether on Skype, on in real time with your developers, and with frequency. You want to ensure your projects stay on track and your developers stay just as motivated as you are with the project. The right conversations with your developer during product planning stages can significantly reduce cost, wasted time, and morale depletion during the execution phase of the project. Asking developers what challenges they’re facing and what may be causing frustration or delays can help you form a strong bond with your developer. This will create a higher success between both you, your developer, and your web programming project.

Don’t: Use Complicated Systems

Always implement Source Code Management (SCM) systems, issue trackers, and possibly some Wiki pages where team members can document insights, lay out ideas and proposals. Collaborative tools will make development and release management much easier to achieve. Systems that are too complicated will take away from time that should be used on implementation and design.
