3 Ways Successful Freelance Writers Use Twitter

Did you know, at some point or another, 19% of online consumers have messaged a brand on Twitter?

This stat speaks for itself; clients happily interact with businesses on this social network. As such, it's a marketing opportunity freelancers shouldn't miss out on.

Here are 3 ways successful freelance writers use Twitter that you can deploy:

1. Keep it Up

Don't expect your marketing efforts to be an overnight success. When it comes to Twitter, consistency is vital. Obviously, this means tweeting every day. But, the real question is, how much?

Well, according to Neil Patel, there isn't a "correct" number of daily tweets you should be sending. But, what he does say is between one and five is an excellent target to have. However, publishing more than that certainly wouldn't hurt!

Never fear, you don't have to stop what you're doing each day to send your tweets. Instead, you can use programs like Buffer, Hootsuite, or Sprout Social to schedule content to publish on Twitter. That way, your tweets will send automatically, so there's no chance of you forgetting.

Try designating an hour a week to planning and scheduling your social media content. Once it becomes a habit, you're far more likely to stay consistent with your marketing efforts!

Handy Hack: Test sending Tweets at different times. That way, you'll get a feel for when your audience is most likely to engage with you. If need be, you could also hire a social media expert on Fiverr to help with that.

2. Use a Targeted Approach

Don't waste your time reaching out to just anyone who interacts with you on Twitter. Instead, be a little selective. After all, you're on here to score new writing gigs, so do yourself a favor and make the process as easy as possible.

Carol Tice, freelance writer extraordinaire, recommends only building relationships with marketing managers and people in your niche. That makes sense, as these are the contact most likely to need your services.

She also suggests getting a feel for their content needs. That way, once you've built a relationship with the prospect, and you eventually start talking about your services, you're well-informed.

For instance, poke around on their website and social media pages to answer the following:

  • Do they regularly update their blog? If not, perhaps you could help with that?
  • Have they got a free giveaway like an ebook to capture leads for their email list?
  • Does it look like the copy on their website is written professionally? I.e., Are there spelling errors, inconsistencies in their tone of voice, do they have strong CTA's, etc.?

3. Don't be Afraid to Hashtag

Hashtags are imperative. Period.


Well, they help your ideal clients find you on Twitter—what's not to love about that?

If you're unsure what to hashtag, you can never go wrong with following Jorden Roper's advice. She says to state your niche, followed by the word marketing. For instance, if you're a wedding blogger, you could say something like #weddingmarketing

Here are a few other hashtag examples you could test:

  • #[insert your niche] blogger
  • #[insert your niche] writer
  • #[insert your niche] copywriter
