So, there I was. Drained, both mentally and physically, from years of working the 9-5. I was stuck in a rut and knew that I needed a change. But isn’t that always the case? You get comfortable with a routine, and the next thing you know, time has flown by and you’re left wondering, “what do I do now?”
Don’t worry; I’ve been there too. In fact, that’s precisely why I’m writing this post. I decided that I needed to take my life back and find a way to work on my own terms. I had to learn how to become an Anywhere Worker.
The idea of being my own boss, setting my own hours, and working from anywhere in the world was highly appealing to me. But I had no idea where to start. If you’re in the same boat, don’t worry. I’m here to help.
My name’s Karen, a content writer from Liverpool, UK. I’m a top, pro-rated freelancer on Fiverr. My journey started 2 years ago when I signed up for Fiverr as a way to make some extra money. But once I started, I realized that there was so much potential for me to make a full-time income—and even more.
Now, I’m living the life of my dreams as an Anywhere Worker, and I’ve teamed up with the awesome crew at Fiverr to help you understand how you can do the same.
An Anywhere Worker is somebody who has the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, at any time. They travel and work from at least two different locations a year. They are their own boss, they set their own hours, and they handle their own workload.
The beauty of being an Anywhere Worker is that you really can work from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection. You could be working from a coffee shop in Italy, on a beach in Thailand, or on top of a mountain in Nepal. It doesn’t matter where you are; as long as you have your laptop and some wifi, you can get the job done.
The Anywhere Worker lifestyle is one of freedom and flexibility. You are in control of your own destiny, and you make your own decisions about how you want to live your life.
You can choose to work from home, or to travel and work from different places around the world. You can even decide to do both, and switch up your location as often as you like. It’s entirely up to you.
The Anywhere Worker lifestyle is a lifestyle of independence. As I mentioned, you are in charge of your work. This means that you can choose to work as much or as little as you want. You can also determine what kind of work you want to do, and how you want to do it.
While the Anywhere Worker lifestyle is incredible, I have to say, it’s not for everyone. In order to be successful, you need to be extremely disciplined and motivated. This lifestyle is not for the faint of heart, and it’s definitely not a 9-5 job.
Check out the list below to see if you have what it takes to be an Anywhere Worker.
Some of the skills and traits that are necessary for being an Anywhere Worker include:
Trust me; I know that the Anywhere Worker lifestyle isn’t for everyone. But, if you have what it takes, it can be an enriching and gratifying adventure. I can attest to that from my own experience. It’s a life of freedom and flexibility—and one that you can truly make your own.
So, you think you have what it takes to be an Anywhere Worker? Great! Here are the steps you need to take in order to make the transition.
The first step is to determine your why. Why do you want to become an Anywhere Worker? What are your motivations? Is it to travel the world? Is it to have more flexibility and freedom in your life? Is it to pursue your passion?
Me, I always wanted to travel. I just loved the idea of being able to see the world and experience different cultures. And, I desired the freedom to work from anywhere I wanted—whether that be in an Airbnb, poolside, or on top of a mountain. (Side note, it’s really hard to work poolside. Don’t believe Instagram influencers or anyone who tells you otherwise. It gets super hot, and your laptop starts to overheat. I tried it, and it was a disaster.)
But, for you, it could be something entirely different. And that’s okay! The important thing is that you clearly understand why you want to become an Anywhere Worker before taking the plunge. Once you determine your why, the rest will fall into place.
The next step is to get your finances in order. This is extremely important, as you need to make sure you have enough money saved up to support yourself.
Remember, as an Anywhere Worker; you won’t have the stability of a regular paycheck coming in every month.
So, you need to make sure you have enough money saved up to cover your bills, and then some. I recommend saving up at least 3-6 months’ worth of living expenses before making the transition. This will give you a cushion—just in case you have a slow month or two.
I have to say since I started working on Fiverr, I have never really had a slow month. It’s been pretty consistent for the entire two years on the platform, but I know that’s not always the case for everyone. So, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Do some soul searching and figure out what it is you want to do with your life. This is important, as you need to find a way to make money doing something you love.
If you hate your job, chances are you will not be very successful working for yourself. So, it’s essential to find something you’re passionate about and that you enjoy doing. Only then will you be able to find the motivation to stick with it, even if you do have a slow month or two.
If you want to be an Anywhere Worker, chances are you will need to freelance. And, in order to get freelancing work, you need to have a strong portfolio. This is your calling card, which potential clients will use to determine if you’re the right fit for their project.
My Fiverr profile is my most powerful marketing tool. It’s how I get the vast majority of my biggest clients, and it’s what has helped me to be successful as an Anywhere Worker. Fiverr isn’t just a freelancing platform; it’s a marketing platform.
You meet wonderful people from all over the world, you build meaningful relationships, and you get to showcase your work to a global audience. If you want to be successful as an Anywhere Worker, you need to create a strong portfolio. Platforms like Fiverr are a great way to do that.
If you’re already part of the Fiverr platform, then you’ll know just how robust a strong portfolio can be. If not, then take some time to create one. Make sure it showcases your best work, and that it highlights the skills and talents you have to offer.
No man is an island, and neither is any Anywhere Worker. In order to be successful, you need to network—a lot! Get yourself out there and introduce yourself to as many people as possible. The more connections you have, the better.
I’m a big fan of LinkedIn. It’s a great way to connect with other professionals. All I have to do is paste my Fiverr link into my profile, and connect with like-minded individuals. This method has worked wonders for me—it’s a big part of how I’ve been successful as an Anywhere Worker.
Another great way to network is to attend events and meetups related to your niche. This allows you to meet potential clients, as well as other freelancers who can help you grow your business.
I know, it’s a big decision, but you have to do it. You have to figure out where you want to live. This is what it all comes down to. This is what you’ve been working towards.
Just kidding. It’s not that serious. Actually, it’s probably the best and most exciting part of your journey. But, it is a decision you need to make.
So, do you want to live in a big city or a small town? Do you want to live in a country with a strong economy, or one with a low cost of living? Or, do you want to country hop and live in multiple places? You are the creator of your own destiny, so it’s up to you to decide.
Personally, I love living in big cities. I’m currently based in Dubai, but before that, I was country hopping to wherever I felt like going. In the past two years, I bounced around Asia, Europe, and the Middle-east.
From swimming in the clear blue waters on the beautiful island of Corfu, Greece, to renting a car and touring the captivating country of Spain, to sipping cocktails in the enchanting Bali, Indonesia—it’s been a whirlwind of a journey, and I’ve loved every minute of it.
Dubai has a lot to offer for Anywhere Workers. There’s a strong economy, plenty of networking opportunities, and the city is incredibly cosmopolitan, making it easy to meet people from all over the world. That being said, it doesn’t have the nature that I crave, but isn’t that the beauty of being an Anywhere Worker? I can always pick up and move to another city— or country—if I want to.
Picking the right location is a personal decision, and there’s no wrong answer. It all comes down to what you’re looking for in a place to live. There’s a whole world at your fingertips, just waiting to be explored. Go ahead and find your perfect spot.
“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all -- the risk of spending your life not doing what you want, on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.”
I found this quote in a book I read titled “The Monk and the Riddle” by Author Randy Komisar, and it resonated with me. It’s something that I think a lot of us can relate to. We often sacrifice our happiness in the present moment for the hope of a better future. But, what if we never get to that future? What if we never have the opportunity to do what we want? What if life introduces us to unexpected twists and turns that take us in a different direction?
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live my life like that. I want to seize the day and do what I want, when I want. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing ever since I became an Anywhere Worker.
So, my final piece of advice to you is to embrace the freedom that you have as an Anywhere Worker. Don’t wait for the perfect time or place. Don’t wait for things to line up perfectly. Just go out there and do it.
Take the leap, and you’ll be surprised at how many doors open up for you. Life is an adventure, so go out there and live it. That’s what I’m doing, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I hope you enjoyed reading this article and that it has inspired you to pack your bags and live the Anywhere Worker lifestyle.
