Which Nation of Doers Has World Cup Fever?

It only comes once every four years, but when it does, it sweeps the globe. We’re talking about the World Cup, and the fever it induces can’t be denied. Even doers like us, who pride ourselves on the hustle, can’t help but tune in daily to catch some of the action, national pride, and highlights and heartaches of this incredible game.

But of course, as doers, it got us thinking. What happens to productivity during a global phenomenon like this? Which nations stay true to the grind, and which nations put their hustle aside for some 90+ minutes a day? We took a look at a few of the pre-tournament favorites—England, Spain, Brazil, and Germany—and how their fans couldn’t help but switch off work to tune into the game during the Group Stage of the tournament.

So which country’s doer community are the most dedicated soccer fans?

Following the kickoff for each country’s first game, Spain, Brazil, England and Germany saw significant dips in activity on the Fiverr platform. Germany took the lead with 29%.

While they may have underperformed in the World Cup, it seems that Germany is the country whose doer community is the most dedicated to watching the game. During their first game, their viewers dropped almost 30 percent from their pre-World Cup average.

Looking deeper at all three of Germany’s games, we see their fans were most tuned into their first game against Mexico. During this game, Germany was trailing 1-0 in the last few minutes. With 10 minutes to go, as the Germans desperately looked for a goal, we saw a 44 percent drop from our Germany-based Fiverr users compared to average. In the final 10 minutes of the second game against Sweden, with the score locked at 1-1 and Germany down to 10 players, we saw a 24 percent drop in German Fiverr activity. Luckily for Germany, Toni Kroos managed to score a goal. In the last minutes of the final game against South Korea, the score was 0-0 with Germany needing a win to go through to the knockout rounds. With 10 minutes left to play, we saw our Germany-based Fiverr user activity drop the most with 49 percent compared to average. This was the largest 10-minute drop in activity that we saw from our Germany users during the World Cup games. Unfortunately for Germany, it was South Korea who managed to score two goals in these final minutes sending the reigning champions crashing out of the tournament.

All three of Germany’s games showed drops in activity during the first hour. They also all saw larger drops during the second hour of the game, likely due to their fans hoping that they could crawl back an extra goal.

So, did your country make the cut as one of the most soccer-crazed during the Group Stage? If you’re not seeing them above, then likely, you guys have a good balance between hustling and relaxing, which is what the freelance lifestyle is all about.
