Fiverr® isn’t just changing lives. It’s changing industries. Jonathan Coleman, known on Fiverr as jontcoleman, has worked as a film and television producer in New York City for six years, but he always wanted to move from behind the camera and do some performing.Blessed with a rich “movie trailer” voice, he started dabbling in voiceovers, but when he launched his Gig® on Fiverr about five months ago, his business skyrocketed.
I heard on Lifehacker that Fiverr was a worldwide network of people buying and selling services over the Internet. I took a look at it, and since there was an entire category just for voiceovers, I thought it might be a great alternative to the traditional voiceover path, which is “audition, audition, audition.” I signed up and within 24 hours, people were coming to me, and I was getting Gigs from Australia and Morocco.
I was astounded at how easy Fiverr is compared to what I was doing. When I started out with voiceovers, I was always sending out emails and going to networking events and handing out business cards. But Fiverr really represents the future of this kind of business. Everything is going global, everything is becoming connected. For anyone who isn’t already easily searchable online, Fiverr has made it easy to get connected to the people you want to get connected to. Fiverr made me realize I hadn’t been thinking big enough about what I could do with my business. It was a way for me to go international without traveling or going to international conferences. Now I’ve had Gigs across the U.S. and Europe, and in Chile, India, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and Georgia, and it just keeps going. It’s only been five months, and Fiverr is already becoming a substantial part of my work. The truth is, every time I see a new order, I light up, because I know it’s going to be something unusual, something international, and an exciting new experience that five months ago would have been impossible. And it’s not just the work I get. I’ve used fellow Fiverr sellers to set up my Facebook presence and do online research for me.
I feel very strongly that my 100 percent positive rating gives me an edge. You need to be willing to do whatever it takes, from start to finish, to make your customers happy. I was already doing this in my non-Fiverr work, so it was a natural thing for me to do on Fiverr as well. But some people don’t appreciate the importance of the saying, “The customer is always right.”If you get someone who is really difficult, or if you feel like you’ve stumbled, do everything you can to make it right, so you can keep building your reputation because when you get someone who’s pleased with your work, they will come back again and again, and probably with larger and larger orders when you can offer extras. Lastly, don’t be afraid to share what you do on Fiverr with everyone you know. It’s really contagious!
